Evaluate swing direction, size, and traffic flow before selecting hardware. A door should open with the intended personnel or material movement, not against it. In an evacuation route, the swing direction must also support safe exit requirements. EU GMP Annex 1 (2022) identifies 10 Pa as a guidance value between rooms of different grades. A poorly oriented door can disturb that pressure relationship.
Measure the largest cart, pallet, or equipment before fixing the opening size. Add clearance for gloved hands and turning space. A narrow opening encourages repeated contact with frames and walls. That detail is easy to miss. The WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual, fourth edition, emphasizes controlled movement and clearly separated workflows. One-way traffic usually reduces crossing paths and unnecessary door cycles. Mark entry and exit routes on the floor, then observe real movement during the busiest shift.
Count door openings for at least several peak periods. Do not rely only on average occupancy data. ASHRAE HVAC guidance stresses limiting uncontrolled air movement in critical spaces. A slower swing may reduce impact damage, but it can frustrate operators and create unsafe queues. I would test the proposed door with a loaded cart, a person in protective clothing, and a maintenance worker. Drawings rarely reveal every problem. Recheck the plan after installation, because actual traffic often differs from the original assumption.
